Artist's Description

This American Avocet's nest is little more than a depression in the sand. But sometimes they are platforms of grass on mudflats. Should the water rise, the breeding pair raises the nest a foot or more with sticks, weeds, bones, and feathers to keep the eggs above water. These are the birds that usually use distraction tactics for defense such as loud screeching, a "crippled bird" act, and even a "dive bomb" display where the bird will swoop down on the predator and narrowly miss it until the intruder turns away. After hatching, the young not only feed themselves, but they can also swim. Shorebirds embark on one of the longest migrations of any North American birds, journeying from arctic nesting grounds to winter in Central and South America. Many travel more than 15,000 miles round-trip, flying at altitudes exceeding 10,000 feet and up to 50 mph.

As a child, while other kids were playing , I was busy exploring the woods and looking under rocks, the footprint of some wild creature or the animal itself would catch my eye… and hold it for awhile... I have enjoyed drawing in pencil since childhood and although I have moved onto...
